Quintessentially New York

In an effort to discover all that NYC has has to offer we have taken to having a Friday night drink in some of the most quintessential locations in the city. Last night was no exception and after work we made our way to the King Cole Bar at the St. Regis Hotel. With the amazing Maxfield Parrish mural behind the bar, this interior is cozy, inviting and luxurious and you really feel like you are in a piece of New York history.

Encaustic Tile

Graphic and decorative floors are making a comeback - especially encaustic tiles.  They were frequently found in the Victorian era and are made by combining a variety of different colours of clay in a pattern to form a single tile. The result is pattern and colour within a tile that will not wear down over time as it's intrinsic to the tiles make-up. I love the juxtaposition of this traditional architectural feature paired with modern furnishings.

And if you can't find the design/colour you are looking for, well you could always do as Miles Redd has in the interior below - have a specialist painter paint it for you!

High Gloss

I am looking at painting the walls and ceiling of a clients library in high gloss and have come across some great images as inspiration.  Whether it's cabinetry, floors, ceilings or wall, a high gloss finish can help give something as simple as paint a new life.

Farrow & Ball have painted the top half of the wall in an emulsion and the bottom in a gloss. This is an interesting design idea, and it's much cheaper than wallpaper. Not to mention what a great look!

Joaquim Tenreiro

He is called the father of 20th Century Brazilian design but his furniture is timeless and relevant to many different eras.  Each piece has an incredible presence with its simplicity of form, attention to detail and beautiful craftsmanship and would make a stunning addition for any collectors portfolio.

His chairs and table were featured in the NY Times Style Magazine Fall 2011 issue.

New in the City

I have recently moved to Manhattan with my husband after living and working in London for 4 years. I am an Interior Designer who lives design and wants to share my enthusiasm with others. In our search for an apartment in the city I came across the Rockefeller Apartments in Mid-Town and thought that they would make a good opening blog. Built in 1936, this building is beautiful both inside and out, and with views over the MoMA it really is a building I would love to live in.
